Starting a Blog

I’m very excited to announce to everyone that the latest and greatest version of WordPress, version 2.8 “Baker,” is immediately available for download.

Wordpress Auto Updated!

Just a quick upgrade note.  The recent upgrade I performed took about 10 minutes.  I was able to automatically upgrade the plugins I’m using once the Wordpress database upgrade occured.  It’s nice to throw up the files and have everything work well.

Wordpress is a great option if you plan to upgrade the software and maintain the blog software yourself.  Otherwise, just go to Wordpress.com or another blog platform like squarespace.com or typepad.com and let them handle the blog upgrades for you.  Then you can spend that extra time blogging. A few dollars a month to let someone else run the maintenance and updates is worth it unless your learning or want the technical responsibilities.

I used to spend about an hour doing the blog upgrade and actually read the blog upgrade instructions.  I recommend following the upgrade steps just to be sure you don’t deleted something important.  Always backup your wordpress database and files before the upgrade.  If something goes wrong, you don’t want to take the night to figure it out when you could just put back the backup and perform the upgrade another time.

A free blogging trial is probably the best way to test the waters if you plan to start a blog.  Why free?  Well, I’m going to bet that your very first blog will be for more of comfort test than anything.   Keep the topic very light and only discuss the personal items that you have no problem with making public. Wordpress now has an auto update feature.  While this makes the inline update process easier, there’s still much to be said for a hosted blog solution.

Hosted blogs allow you to focus on the blog and someone else the blog software.
